Overseas Dental Brings Specialized Dental Care to the Florida Keys

“Ma, if that tooth gets any worse, you’re going to have to swallow your food whole like a fish.”

“I’m not driving up to Miami.”

“Ma, you can’t keep putting this off!”

“I’m fine. Stop fussing!”

Variations of this conversation are all too familiar to Keys residents, which is why Dr. Maya has spent years working to change that reality—one specialist and one patient at a time.

His goal is simple but deeply community-minded: Keys residents should not have to leave the place they call home to receive excellent dental care.

That philosophy has shaped Overseas Dental into a multispecialty practice with doctors whose expertise is matched by their compassion. Oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Andre Ledoux and Dr. Carlos Boada, a dentist who limits his practice to solely endodontics, bring different skills and life stories to the practice.

Dr. Andre Ledoux: Military Service to Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

For Dr. Ledoux, service began long before dentistry.

Growing up in Louisiana, he knew from an early age that he wanted to join the military. His father and uncle had served in the Army, and, like many young people of his generation, he was inspired by the era of “Top Gun.” He first imagined driving a tank, but a recruiter listened to his interests and suggested healthcare instead.

That advice redirected his life.

Dr. Ledoux joined the Navy and served for nine years as a medic and surgical technologist. The role placed him inside the operating room, where he saw how skilled care could change the course of someone’s recovery.

Dentistry became the bridge between his medical experience and the work he found most meaningful. After graduating from Nova Southeastern University, he pursued advanced training in oral and maxillofacial surgery, completing his surgical residency in 2015 and fellowships in 2017.

What an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon Treats

Oral and maxillofacial surgeons treat conditions involving the teeth, jaws, face, cranium, and neck—from impacted teeth and extractions to infections, tumors, facial trauma, and reconstruction.

“The face is such an impactful place,” Dr. Ledoux explains. “It affects function, appearance, and how someone interacts with the world.”

His military background influenced the areas of surgery that interested him most. Exposure to ballistic facial injuries gave him an appreciation for reconstruction and helping patients regain function after devastating injuries.

Today, his most common procedures at Overseas Dental include impacted teeth, extractions, and dental implants.

He joined Overseas Dental after Dr. Layne retired, and Dr. Maya’s reputation made the decision easier.

“Dr. Maya is highly respected and liked by everyone,” Dr. Ledoux says. “The timing was right, and they needed an experienced oral surgeon.”

Dr. Ledoux travels from Homestead to the Keys every Tuesday and Thursday, as well as every other Wednesday. The commute is significant, but so is the need.

Because the Keys are remote, patients sometimes delay treatment or struggle to find specialty care. The practice also serves the military communities in Homestead and Key West, where oral surgery is not readily available.

“It’s a great honor to have the trust people give you,” he says. “Patients come to you in need, and you’re able to help them, see them improve, and foster those relationships.”

He also provides pro bono dental extractions through Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist. He jokes that he works seven days a week, but when he can step away, he enjoys gravel-road cycling and backcountry fishing in the Everglades.

His arrival is part of Dr. Maya’s effort to make specialized care a little less complicated for Keys families by bringing experienced doctors closer to the patients who need them, regardless of their age. That coordination is especially valuable when a patient requires surgery, a root canal, an implant, restorative care, or procedures performed under IV sedation. The doctors can collaborate in-house with a fuller understanding of each patient’s needs.

Dr. Carlos Boada: Endodontic Care and Root Canal Expertise

For Dr. Carlos Boada, complexity is part of the appeal.

Dr. Boada has been part of the Overseas Dental team for a couple of years, traveling from Miami to the Keys multiple times each month while serving patients throughout South Florida. He works with approximately 16 practices, but the Keys present a distinctive professional challenge.

Many of his local patients are older than 65. With age, root canals can become narrower and more difficult to navigate, making endodontic treatment more technically demanding. While some doctors might avoid those cases, Dr. Boada is drawn to them.

“I like the challenge,” he says. “The population is unique, and there is a big need because of the remote location.”

That willingness to confront difficult cases defines his career.

Born in Colombia, Dr. Boada originally planned to become a physician. During a pre-medical course, however, he became involved with the university’s dentistry program and realized it was a better fit. He graduated from Universidad El Bosque in 1996 and began practicing as a general dentist.

Endodontics—the branch of dentistry focused on dental pulp, nerves, and treatments such as root canals—was not initially his strength. Rather than avoiding it, he returned to school and turned the area he found most difficult into his specialty.

“It was my weakness at first,” he says. “I wanted it to become my strength. Now I excel in it.”

He needed that persistence again after moving to the United States in 2011 in search of greater opportunity and distance from the violence affecting Colombia. Although already an experienced dentist and trained endodontist, he had to complete the demanding process of validating his credentials in the United States.

Dr. Boada completed an advanced general dentistry residency at Larkin Hospital and worked his way back into the profession he had already spent years mastering. That perseverance now benefits Keys patients who might otherwise have to travel hours for specialized treatment.

He first learned about Overseas Dental through a professional colleague. When he visited the office and met Dr. Maya, he was immediately impressed by both the practice and the person behind it.

“I fell in love with the office and with Dr. Maya because he is such a great guy,” Dr. Boada says.

His connection to the community extends beyond his regular work. Through Doral Pro Health, he volunteers his services for underserved patients, making himself available when the organization needs endodontic care. Away from dentistry, he enjoys traveling, reading, attending concerts, spending time with friends, and going to the beach.

Dr. Ledoux and Dr. Boada each followed a demanding road to their specialties—one shaped by military service and surgery, the other by persistence and a determination to master what once challenged him most.
