Reef Builders Florida Keys: Scott Galloway & Karl Diaz’s Story

KEYS LIFE / PEOPLE & HOMES

Land of
Opportunity

Scott Galloway’s journey from Scotland to the Florida Keys—and the relationships behind Reef Builders.

Scotland was home, but at 18 years old, Scott Galloway began wondering what else might be possible.

He had grown up hearing America described as the land of opportunity—the kind of place where hard work, ambition and a willingness to take a chance could open doors. Then a two-week vacation to South Florida to visit his older brother gave him the chance to see it for himself, and he loved what he saw.

“I told my brother, ‘Find me a job,’” he said. “I’ll be back soon.”

Once the paperwork was in order, he returned to South Florida ready to work. Scott had always been driven, and America offered the room he was looking for to see how far that drive could take him.

“Everything I heard about the American Dream,” he says, “became true for me. I had opportunities here to grow at a level I don’t think I would have had back in Scotland.”

From South Florida to a Home in the Keys

Construction had been part of Scott’s world for much of his life, and over time he built a successful commercial glazing company in Pompano Beach. Years later, though, another part of South Florida began pulling him farther south.

About a decade ago, Scott bought a small house in Long Key. What began as a place to escape gradually became something more. Somewhere along the way, the Keys stopped feeling like the place he went to get away and became the place where opportunity had grown into a life he didn’t want to leave. He sold his home in Pompano, found a vacant lot and decided to build a house of his own. Six years ago, the Keys officially became his home.

By then, Scott had already spent years building a business and working in construction, but completing his own home sparked something different. When the project was finally finished, he found himself restless.

“I got a little bored,” he says with a laugh.

So he started a home improvement and renovation business. What began modestly soon expanded in scope, eventually becoming Reef Builders and encompassing everything from remodeling projects to major renovations and full construction.

Scott invested all of his time and effort into the projects and let the work speak for itself.

A Recommendation That Became a Friendship

In the Keys, word of mouth goes a long way. A happy client tells his friend. His friend goes fishing with a captain. A captain knows a homeowner who wants to renovate a house down the canal. That is more or less how Scott met Karl Diaz.

Karl and his wife, Claudia, had purchased a home in Port Largo, a Key Largo neighborhood especially appealing to serious anglers because of its open-water access. The house was well built, but they wanted to modernize it, customize it and make it feel entirely their own. When Karl mentioned the project to his charter captain friend, Justin, the recommendation was immediate: call Scott.

Before long, Karl and Claudia were sitting with Scott and his wife, Barbi, at their home. According to Scott, the connection was instant.

“We hit it off right away,” he says. “I remember telling him, ‘Even if I don’t end up doing your project, I can pretty much guarantee we’re still going to be friends.’”

Karl agreed. One of Scott’s favorite things about working in the Keys has been how often the people he meets through construction become part of his life. Karl and Claudia were no exception. Over the course of the project, their working relationship turned into a genuine friendship—one that extended to their two dogs Archie and Duke, who became just as accustomed to seeing Scott around as their owners did.

Turning a Remodel Into a Dream Home

That relationship gave Scott and Karl the kind of trust that allows a project to keep evolving. What began as a minor remodel grew into a dream project as Karl and Claudia saw new possibilities and trusted Scott to make them happen.

“Karl would ask, ‘Can we knock this down?’ and I’d say, ‘Yeah.’ Then Claudia would say, ‘Can we do this?’ and the answer was always, ‘Yeah, we can do that too,’” Scott says.

By the time the project was finished, there was hardly a surface left untouched.

“We touched everything from the floor to the roof and everything in between,” Scott says. “Their dream kept getting bigger, so I kept up with it.”

That transformation captures what Scott enjoys most about construction. With a new build, he likes taking something from dirt to finished product and watching it come to life. With remodeling, the satisfaction comes from seeing what an existing home could become and helping the owners get there. Ultimately, though, the greatest satisfaction comes from seeing how happy the owners are when their visions are realized.

Building a Life Beyond Work

For much of his adult life, Scott measured progress by work—what he could build, grow or accomplish next. He jokes that he was essentially married to his company in Pompano before marrying Barbi later in life and becoming a stepdad to her daughter and son.

“When it comes to working too much, I’m guilty as charged,” he says, “but the Keys have taught me to slow down and enjoy life outside of work more.”

He and Barbi share their house with their three dogs Lexy, Lola and Bunty, and while they enjoy boating and spending time with friends, Scott admits the boat does not leave the canal nearly as often as it probably should.

A good day off might instead involve dinner with friends, taking the dogs out in the golf cart or simply staying home. For a man who has spent most of his life working toward the next thing, Scott is surprisingly content not to go very far.

“I’m definitely a homebody,” he says.

There is something fitting about that since the home he is happiest staying in is one he built himself. It was also through building that home that Scott formed relationships with many of the tradespeople he still works with today. They earned his trust on his own project before he ever asked them to work on someone else’s.

The Philosophy Behind Reef Builders

That trust is part of the straightforward philosophy behind Reef Builders: take care of your clients, take care of your people and give every project the attention it deserves. Whether Scott is overseeing a major build or fitting a smaller project into the schedule, the size of the job may change, but the standard does not.

It is a simple approach, and not all that different from the one Scott has followed since he first arrived in America: work hard, treat people well and make the most of the opportunities in front of you. In the Keys, those opportunities often come through people. One introduction leads to a project, a project leads to a friendship, and a good experience gets passed along to someone else.
