Some friendships last a lifetime, weaving through the years like intricate embroidery—each stitch a shared memory, a laugh, a moment. For Byrne Coles and Elizabeth Shipley, their friendship began with a job interview in a children’s clothing store when Elizabeth was just 17. Byrne, already in the world of retail, saw something in Elizabeth that sparked a lifelong bond. That connection—one that has endured through moves, careers, marriages, and children—has now found its next chapter in the heart of Islamorada.
Byrne and Elizabeth, both originally from Lexington, Kentucky, always had a love for fashionand Florida. Byrne’s passion took her from retail to becoming a sales rep and then to running a successful monogram studio in Smyrna, Georgia. Elizabeth, with over 25 years of experience in women’s clothing, specializes in selecting pieces that blend style and comfort. Their paths may have diverged over the years, but they never strayed too far from each other—or from theFlorida shores. With family roots and memories tied deeply to Pompano Beach and Islamorada, they have always been drawn to the coastal lifestyle.
So, when the opportunity arose to take over Islamorada Mercantile, it felt like fate. A beloved staple in the community, Islamorada Mercantile has been around in various forms for decades, with previous owners leaving their mark on the space. It has clearly been very special to each owner, including Trulia, who still works at the shop and whose handprints are in the concrete out back. Byrne and Elizabeth knew they couldn’t let this special shop slip away.
“We just fell into it,” Elizabeth laughs. “It all happened so fast, but we knew it was right.”
Now at the helm, the duo is putting their own touch on the shop while maintaining the vibe that has made it so successful. Their vision? A lifestyle boutique that reflects the breezy, easygoing spirit of Islamorada. They are introducing more gift items, monogrammed pieces, and stylish yet practical clothing perfect for hot-weather living and travel. From cookbooks to dresses, everything in the store is carefully curated to make shoppers feel confident, comfortable, and connected to the island.
But what truly makes Islamorada Mercantile special isn’t just the merchandise—it’s the people. The long-time local employees, who have all stayed on through the transition, embody the welcoming spirit of the Keys. “They know what the Keys are all about,” Elizabeth says. “They make everyone feel at home, and they’ve done the same for us.”
For Byrne and Elizabeth, taking over Islamorada Mercantile isn’t just about business—it’s about being a part of the Keys community. They recently took part in a fashion show fundraiser at the Marathon Yacht Club and are excited to find more ways to contribute to the community. They also continue to enjoy the Keys lifestyle with their families as they have over the past decades. Byrne loves diving, and both she and Elizabeth enjoy boating and simply soaking in the breathtaking beauty of the water. “I can stare at that water all day long,” Elizabeth says.
“We’re so grateful to be a part of this wonderful community and for the chance to help women in the Keys feel beautiful, confident, and comfortable.”
To celebrate, Byrne and Elizabeth are hosting a Grand Re-Opening of Islamorada Mercantile on March 20th from 4-7 pm at 81900 Overseas HWY Islamorada, FL 33036. Everyone is invited to join the fun, which will include good food and swag bags!
With a deep-rooted friendship, a love for fashion, and an appreciation for the Keys lifestyle, Byrne and Elizabeth have found the perfect blend of business and pleasure in Islamorada Mercantile. Their journey proves that sometimes the best opportunities are embraced together.
