Making It Right – Law Offices of K.H.A

Born and raised in London, Kene Anusionwu arrived in Florida in 2008 with a basketball scholarship and a simple moral compass that guided his steps: to make things right. That compass first pointed Kene to Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona, a historically Black institution founded on principles of justice and opportunity, where he played basketball through his junior and senior years.

Off the courts, Kene noticed a troubling gap: student athletes lacked proper legal representation and management. These young people, like himself, were navigating contracts, scholarships, and life-changing decisions, often without anyone truly looking out for their best interests.

“When I was an athlete, there weren’t many good people for legal management who were well-versed as both lawyers and agents,” Kene reflects. “I wanted to be that person and make sure athletes had someone in their corner who understood both sides.”

So, while his teammates dreamed of the NBA, Kene set his sights on the law. He didn’t continue his journey alone, though. He met his wife, Retesha, during undergrad, and they married right after his senior year.

After law school, Kene was awarded the Virgil Hawkins Fellowship, named in honor of the first African American lawyer admitted to practice law in Florida. The fellowship provides new attorneys with an office and the opportunity to represent underserved communities for the first two years of their legal career.

“It’s unusual for a lawyer to start their own practice right out of law school, but I was able to because of the hands-on experience I gained through the fellowship.”

Those two years representing Florida’s most vulnerable citizens was a humbling experience and made Kene value all that he has even more. Today, Kene and Retesha have built a beautiful blended family with three older children—ages 25, 22, and 18—and two younger children, ages 8 and 5. Four daughters and one son means Kene is decidedly outnumbered, but he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We love to travel as a family and go to sporting events together,” he says. “There’s always something happening, always something to celebrate.”

Becoming a father deepened Kene’s interest in family law, and now it’s one of his key services. Whether he’s helping parents navigate divorce while keeping their children’s best interests at the forefront, assisting families through adoption, or establishing child support arrangements that actually work, he approaches each case with the heart of a father who knows what’s at stake.

As Kene’s practice grew throughout Southern Florida, Retesha encouraged him to extend his reach even further south—to the Florida Keys, where her mother was born and raised.

“My wife has always admired the atmosphere in the Keys,” Kene says. “There’s something special about that tight-knit community, and my approach to law has always been rooted in the community.”

Beyond his legal practice, Kene has maintained his commitment to community service. He organizes back-to-school drives where families receive book bags, haircuts, and school supplies. In addition to Toys for Tots, he partners with doctors and fellow lawyers to provide sneakers and gifts to families in need during the holidays.

These efforts aren’t separate from his legal work—they’re an extension of the same principle that’s guided him since the beginning.

For personal injury clients, he seeks the justice and financial support they need to heal and rebuild. For family law clients, he works to ensure children are protected, parents’ rights are respected, and families can navigate difficult transitions with dignity and fairness.

Because at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about: making things right for the people who need it most.
