Simple to Smart – Innovative Technology Solutions

Three kids growing up in the Florida Keys: a tech geek, his best friend, and his brother. Their after-school routine looked like every other Keys childhood: afternoons on the water and under the sun, evenings gaming on rebuilt consoles, weekends at the movie theater watching the latest blockbuster.

Fast forward twenty years. Those same three are fine-tuning state-of-the-art smart home systems— designing immersive soundscapes, programming lighting that mimics the sun’s natural rhythm, and creating cinematic experiences that rival any theater.

Lorenzo Giles, Devon Spaulding, and Omar Leroy didn’t just grow up together in the Keys; they built a business together, one wire at a time.

The Friend Who Found His Frequency

Devon Spaulding met Lorenzo in middle school at Key Largo School, and their friendship was instant. “We’d skateboard, wakeboard, go out on the boat and to the movies—typical Keys stuff,” Devon recalls.

Lorenzo and Devon were both tinkerers who loved taking things apart and rebuilding them, but Devon also pursued another passion: music. He picked up the guitar as a kid and started singing, eventually forming his first band at Florida State University and later enrolled at Full Sail University to study audio engineering.

When Lorenzo started Innovative Technology Solutions, Devon was at the top of his list to bring on.

“It was a no-brainer to come work with Lorenzo,” Devon says. “His brother, Omar, came on first, then me shortly after. We started by meeting in Lorenzo’s living room, building equipment racks right there on his floor.”

Those early days were humble. The three of them worked together and learned every facet of the business: installation, programming, system design, client relations. Today, as Innovative’s Lead Sales Engineer, Devon brings his audio expertise to every project. What Devon enjoys most, though, isn’t the technology—it’s the people.

“The relationship building feels very personal,” he says. “When they see their vision come together, they light up, and it feels really good knowing they’ll continue to enjoy that feeling.”

Outside of work, Devon is still deeply involved in music. He plays solo gigs, performs with his band, EgoFreek, and runs sound for the Key West Songwriters Festival.

At home, he’s a dedicated family man with a wife and three daughters, ages twelve, eighteen, and twenty-one. “We love to travel together,” he says, “but the best part of my day is just being with them.”

The Brother Who Found His Niche

Unlike his younger brother Lorenzo, Omar Leroy didn’t grow up dreaming about technology. His interests were decidedly more hands-on and outdoors.

“What I liked most about growing up in the Keys was the aquatic life,” Omar says. “Boating, fishing, jumping in the canal with friends.”

The two brothers were close—”as close as we could be without killing each other,” Lorenzo jokes—but they didn’t initially plan to work together. After high school, Omar became an electrician, working throughout South Florida.

Then 2008 hit. The economy collapsed, construction jobs dried up, and Omar wanted to explore more opportunities. Lorenzo, meanwhile, was working at Reef Radio Electronics and happily put in a good word for his big brother.

Omar got the job, but it wasn’t love at first sight. “It wasn’t my first nature,” Omar admits. “It took time to wrap my head around it all. But I fell in love with the mechanical aspects and the management side of things.”

His background as an electrician gave him an advantage; he understood how buildings were constructed, how electrical systems worked, how to troubleshoot problems in real time. Most importantly, he had an exceptional ability to execute.

“There are always tons of variables in what we do,” Omar explains. “But I’m good at figuring things out and making sure everything’s done correctly within our timeline.”

Like Devon, his favorite part comes at the very end.

“I love the handoff,” Omar says. “I get to see the client’s face when everything’s finished. I give them a full lesson on everything, and get to watch them play with their new toy.”

Omar’s personal life centers around family. “I’m a family man. We spend a lot of time outdoors—walking and riding bikes in parks. I go fishing with my son, play volleyball with my daughter. I try to spend as much time with them as possible.”

A Day in a Smart Home

Many homeowners want smart home features but don’t fully understand what that entails or what amazing possibilities are available. That’s exactly why Lorenzo created the Innovative Technology Solutions showroom at mile marker 95—to immerse clients so they can imagine what it could be like in their own home.

The experience begins the moment you wake up: motorized shades rise gently as natural light fills your bedroom, syncing with your circadian rhythm. You walk past a painting of the Keys horizon, and it glows with the warm, golden hues of sunrise.

In the kitchen, dynamic lighting bathes your breakfast space in the soft, energizing glow of early morning. In your home office, human-centric lighting adjusts throughout the morning, keeping you productive while reducing eye strain.

As afternoon shifts to evening, the atmosphere transforms with your lifestyle. Bright task lighting illuminates your food prep while your favorite podcast plays through seamlessly integrated speakers. When dinner’s ready, you move to the patio where the lighting and music is customized to your mood.

Later, your media room becomes a private cinema with the touch of a button. Shades lower, lights fade to black, and the carefully designed audio system rivals any theater.

Ready to turn in for the evening, you walk past that same painting once more, and it’s completely transformed. What glowed with sunrise warmth now radiates the deep oranges and purples of sunset—the same artwork transformed by dynamic lighting.

It’s no surprise this showroom recently won Best Immersive Lutron Experience and multiple Home of the Year awards—meaningful recognition from Lutron, who invented the dimmer switch in the 1960s.

Innovative also partners with local manufacturers like Coastal Source, based in Marathon, which produces outdoor lighting and audio systems designed to withstand the Keys’ salt air environment.

Simple Beginnings to Smart Solutions

From pulling wire on projects and building racks in Lorenzo’s living room to managing a thirty-person team across two offices, Lorenzo, Devon, and Omar have come a long way. They started simple—three friends doing what they loved in the place they loved. Now they’re building smart solutions for clients who trust them not just with technology, but with their vision of home.

Simple beginnings. Smart solutions. And a brotherhood that’s been there from the start.
